Short Handle Bags
LSHORT HANDLE HANDBAGS COMBINE FUNCTIONALITY AND ELEGANCE. SINCE THE BEGINNING, THESE PIECES WERE CREATED TO LAST SEVERAL YEARS.
They were created on demand to a craftsman or specialized shop. The most important aspect of the production process was their structure and quality leather whose softness and beauty improved with time.
Vintage short handle handbags were made of various leathers and materials. It was leather goods manufacturers and not dressmakers who created most of the handbags at the beginning of the twentieth century. They worked with all types of leather, from the robust, firm, and traditional leathers such as cowhide, goatskin, calfskin, and lambskin, to exotic skins. The latter are often found in their natural and true condition since they were not usually dyed. For this reason, tortoise and crocodile skin can only be found in their most typical colours like black, brown, golden brown, or beige. Snakeskin, lizard, ostrich, and eel skin provided not only very appealing hides, but were also extremely durable. These are very fine and elastic skins, making them resistant to ageing.
However, the manufacturing process is very delicate. It is precisely because of their fineness that extreme care is needed during the cutting and tanning processes so as not to damage them. Only expert artisans can perform this job, which requires several years of experience and preparation. This is why these skins are so expensive and are considered synonymous with exclusivity and quality.
Handbags were an investment meant to last for a long time. For this reason, patent leather became very popular. Its shiny surface made it very appealing for formal occasions, being very easy to clean as well. With the emergence of plastic, synthetic leathers were made. Patent leather and other leathers had now a more affordable version.
Other materials such as beads and stones, metal mesh, tissues, upholstery, and embroidery like Petit Point were all available in the smallest versions of handbags.
